After water damage, your main focus should be on safety:

  • Is it safe to stay indoors?
  • Electrical hazards and the risk of slips and falls are among the most common problems.
  • Only engage in activities that are safe for you.
  • Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful.
  • Do you have a water damage emergency?

What you should do after a flood?

  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wooden furniture after removing lamps and tabletops.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wooden blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet.
  • Turn on the air conditioner to optimize drying in summer.
  • Remove colored rugs from the wet carpet.
  • Move art supplies to a safe, dry place.
  • Pick up loose items from the floor.

What NOT to do after a flood?

  • Do not leave wet fabrics lying around. Hang up furs and leather goods.
  • Do not leave books, magazines or other colored items on the wet carpet or floor.
  • Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water.
  • Do not use a television or other household appliances.
  • Do not turn on ceiling lights when the ceiling is wet and do not stay in rooms where the ceiling is sagging.
